Producer BRENDAN O'BRIEN Talks About Working With AC/DC

December 15, 2008

Jonathan Williams of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution recently conducted an interview with acclaimed Atlanta music producer Brendan O'Brien (PEARL JAM, STONE TEMPLE PILOTS, RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE, AC/DC, MASTODON). An excerpt from the chat follows below.

Atlanta Journal-Constitution: You've worked with a number of high-profile bands, but AC/DC ranks up there as one of the biggest. How does it feel to have been involved with an album ["Black Ice"] that has been so well received?

Brendan O'Brien: Going into it, there were no real expectations because I literally met them the first day of recording. Their people called my people and they wanted me to work with them on the new record. They hadn't made a record in seven or eight years and the last few records they'd done, though they were good records, they hadn't been received as well as other ones had been for them. I didn't know what to expect, but the first day we got together, Angus and Malcolm [Young] sat down and played me a bunch of demos and I was pretty encouraged by them. As soon as they started playing, it was obvious they still sounded great, they still had it and it was just a matter of trying to return them to form a bit. As far as this album being received well, I can't say it's completely unexpected because my feeling was that once an artist has established a sound, if you put out a record of songs that people like, whether you call them hits or whatever, people will respond. But I must tell you I did not expect it to be as overwhelming as it's been. I guess you could call it a full-blown phenomenon at this point because it's really blown up all over the world. And I can tell you that they are very gratified by the response and they're really excited about it, too.
